Nikon LS-30 and Windows XP Peter Eisenburger 15:41:14
I have problems to get Nikon LS-30 run under Windows XP SP-2.

Have installed the Adaptec ASPI driver and the Nikon Scan 3.1.2 from
www.nikonusa.com.

But what's strange after unzipping the Nscan 312/INF folder only
contains LS40, LS2000, LS4000 and LS 8000 - subfolders and no LS30.

Any advice?

Tsk , tsk :-) Don 17:17:12
 On 1 Aug 2006 15:13:55 -0700, "Roger S." <rsmith02@gmail.com> wrote:
You don't ask a victim of aggression to stop defending themselves.>> Appeasement has never stopped a bully and only encourages more aggression.>
You can "defend yourself" without adopting the tactics of your>tormentor. If you stay in the Don persona and wrote reasonable,>helpful posts, you'd win the support of others, which is ultimately>what this is about, the rest of us. You'll never win over your>persecutor.

I only write reasonable, helpful posts! And there is no torment or
persecution. Just Bart's anti-social behavior that hurts the group.
That does nothing to Don. How can an anonymous entity (a "Don") be
hurt? That just doesn't make sense. The only person hurting is Bart as
can been seen from his ever increasing overexcitement.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with any one person. It's about the
group. And if the group came down on the *initiator* - and this is
important - *regardless* of what they think of the initiator (love him
or hate him) this would have been over by now.

How does that go: "I disagree with what you say but I'll defend your
right to say it". Conversely, if this group (in unison) made it clear
to the initiator (after the very *first* fake):

We agree/disagree with what you're saying but faking messages is not
the way to go about it. It does nothing to Don but only hurts the rest
of us.

If everyone did that, the initiator would realize the futility and we
would never be where we are now. Until the group as a whole takes a
stand this is bound to erupt again.
*This has nothing to do with Bart*

It has *everything* to do with Bart.

He's been stewing silently for years. Occasionally he erupts with
rabid vitriol but that apparently did not give him the satisfaction so
he now resorted to antisocial behavior. That's not working either so
he's now locked into a spiral he can't get out of without (in his
mind) losing face. Of course, by continuing he just makes it worse.

You like to (armchair) analyze, right? Can't you see the same patterns
here? Specifically, Bart's inability to analyze things e.g. what the
consequences his revelation of Ed supplying log data will mean? Not to
mention the meticulous attention to detail you yourself pointed out.
Etc. Or the red-hot rage after his identity has been revealed. That
really touched a raw nerve! Who else would waste so much time or care
that someone else's identity was revealed? No, this really cut Bart to
the bone. That's why he's so totally out of control now.
It is more logical to think that a poster tired of the incessant Don>anti-Vuescan hyperbole decided to jump in and try to lessen your>influence by posting evidence of your hypocrisy under your name. If>this were a regulated community, you'd have been expelled by now (and>so would the fake poster if he/she persisted.) It's not regulated, so>we have this sort of vigilante justice.

Don't look now Roger, but your bias is showing.

If this were a regulated community Don's "critics" are the ones that
would've been expelled.

Don never used profanity or engaged in anti-social behavior. His
"critics" do all the time. Have you forgotten that Don never responds
to insults and name calling? Of course, if Bart had done that instead
of faking messages, he would've been ignored.
It doesn't matter who started it.>If you were a bigger person, you'd stop perpetuating it as it goes>against what you claim to stand for. Are *you* a reasonable person?

Absolutely! But what you suggest is appeasement and surrender to a
bully, not reason.

You don't expect the victim to bow down and then blame the victim if
they refuse to take aggression lying down. You blame the aggressor.

Don.

Plustek 7200 or 7200i & Vuescan Garryb59 00:38:49

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a scanner for my father who has a stack of old
family slides that he anta to convert to digital. We did talk about
getting them done professionally, but he's decided to have a crack
himself. He doesn't want massive blow-ups, 10"x8" would be the very
largest.

I've been looking at the Plustek 7200 and think this will probably fit
the bill, althopugh I have a question that I can't seem to find the
answer to. The 7200i is the latest version of the Plustek, with
improved features like the the dust and scratch removal features, but
would it be possible to buy the cheaper 7200 and use something like
Vuescan? Does Vuescan have a scratch clean up facility, or is this
dependent upon the hardware of the scanner?

Any input is appreciated

cheers
Garry

Vuescan 8.3.58 , Nikon, 4000ED and Nion SF-21 roll adapter Rlane 16:00:41
 I'm using Vuescan 8.3.58 with a Nikon Coolscan 4000ED and the SF-21
roll film adapter.
Vuescan will not allow me to scan past frame 6 on the roll.
Is there a Vuescan setting that is causing this, or is it just that
Vuescan cannot fully use the SF-21?

Explanation of PaperPort error message History Fan 16:58:43
I own a new Dell desktop PC, running XP Home SP2, 1GB of system RAM,
256MB of video RAM. Just a few days ago, I won an auction on eBay for the
Visioneer 5800USB flatbed scanner. It uses PaperPort 7.02 Deluxe software.

I have noticed a weird, but annoying glitch with the PaperPort
software that causes it to repeatedly crash. Here is how I replicate it:

1) I open the PaperPort software and open an image I've already
scanned
2) I repeated click the 'Zoom In' button until the image gets so
large that you need to use the scroll bars to see everything.

At that point, PaperPort crashes. Here is some of the info reported
by Dr. Watson regarding these crashes:

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\Paprport.exe (pid=3316)
When: 8/9/2006 @ 18:39:22.171
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\Paprport.exe (pid=3268)
When: 8/9/2006 @ 18:57:44.953
Exception number: 80000003 (hardcoded breakpoint)

Is there anything that can be done about this? A relative of
mine uses the same scanner, and I cannot reproduce the crash on her
computer.

Digital ROC GEM DEE Hoshisato 12:31:13
For colour negatives, should I use Digital ROC, GEM and DEE in the
default settings or how would you judge what negative needs what
settings or needs to have these features disabled? Most of the
negatives I scanned with ROC, GEM and DEE enabled look quite good, but
at least one came out with 'weird' colours.

Thanks

Silverfast is kicking me straight to PS CS2 Guest 09:03:15
My new Epson V750 came with Silverfast Ai. When I scan a transparency
in Silverfast it immediately takes me to CS2. Since Silverfast is a PS
plugin, am I at that point using the Silverfast color space in CS2?

Acer Prisa 620ST problem Andy 07:57:26
My Acer scanner no longer wants to scan transparencies or negatives. Scans
images OK though.
For transparencies & negatives the light in the lid comes on and a warming
up message comes on, counting back '25...24...23..., but freezes and the '1
second' point. I think it may be clashing with other software as it was
working under Windows XP earlier in the year. I believe I have the lastest
driver (MiraScanv342s_BQA)

Suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Andy

HP 4890 scanner - quality of 35 mm slide scans Bruce bowman 14:24:02
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with experience with a HP 4890.

My 4890 is shifting shadow areas on 35 mmm positives & negatives from
shades of gray to shades of blue.

I am using latest HP scanning software (ver. 7.0). The colour balance I
set in PREVIEW mode is not accurately maintained in final scan.

Have been dealing with both US & Canadian support people for the past
few weeks, and they've replaced the scanner once, and also exchanged the
TMA unit for the latest version - I suspect that the pre-calibration is
not being done properly.

Any ideas or suggestions?

EPSON V700, anyone had to clean underside of glass Jwsm 20:03:26
Am wondering, due to glass cleaning issues on my 4990, if anyone has had
similar smoky plumes on underside of the V700 glass, and process to remove
to top. The V700 is quite different in appearance to the 4990, which I
learnt to open (not with ease) to clean.

Before purchasing the V700, I want to know what I'm getting into (my 4990
needed to be cleaned from the onset).

The first unit was returned because the glass was filthy, and the
replacement wasn't much better. Cleaning was done in my presence under
warranty, but got it home to find the glass smeary (not visible until
connected and turned on).

Only detergent and water would remove the smears, before a final clean with
a glass cleaner and an antistatic spray.

unable to install new scanner Guest 20:15:40
We are trying to upgrade a scanner (from a Fujitsu 4xxx series to a
5750c). When I try to install the new scanner driver, an error pops up
that says "Please remove 'scanner utility for microsoft windows.'"

When we try to remove that utility in the Add/Remove Programs feature,
it pops up with another error -- "An installation support file could
not be found" -- and quits the uninstall.

We have tried to remove every single trace of Fujitsu files and TWAIN
drivers, from the hard drive and registry, but every time we restart
something keeps writing these files back and making it impossible to
install the new scanner (because of the paradox above).

Thanks for any help.

hp 4670 - additional items - saving multiple images John 18:57:55
Anyone know how I can scan / save as jpg or other - multiple image files -
other than one-by-one. When I say "Yes" to additional items - scan several
slides and then click "No" (finish) - I only get an option to save all the
items as a pdf or html or rich-text ?? - I have a large number of slides
that I need to save as individual images.

Any ideas??

EZcolor target for Silverfast? Guest 17:52:12
I just unstalled my V750 and the Silverfast Ai software didn't include
any color targets. The EZcolor software did include a 4X5 transparency
target. Silverfast will sell me a target for $95 or I could use the
EZcolor target for calibration. Would I be btter off using Silverfast
without target calibration or calibrating it with the EXcolor target?

Canoscan FS4000US green and grainy Brian Wickham 22:28:21
My Canoscan FS4000 has taken ill after not using it for quite a few
months. It scans greenish showing a lot of grain and no contrast.
I'm using Vuescan Pro (latest download) and my Portra scans are now
terrible. I'm reasonably confident it isn't the software's fault.

I took the cover off and blew it out with Dust Off which made a slight
improvement. So I suspect the light source or the optical path may
need a cleaning. Can that be done? Or is it a deeper problem than I
thought? Can a scanner tech handle the job at a reasonable price?

Visioneer 9450 USB Rocco 20:32:45
I still have this scanner though I am disgusted with its ADF
performance. It almost always picks up the wrong page (not the first
page in the stack), picks up several pages instead of just one at a
time, or jams.

I was discussing scanning issues with a visitor to my office and he
thought that cleaning the pick up roller or some such manuever could
make a big difference.

1. Anyone thinks this would actually make a material difference?

2. What should be used to clean the roller/thing? The visitor said
probably alcohol or just a damp cloth with soap or water should be
used, but one was probably correct and the other incorrect. He didn't
know which.

3. What about replacing or cleaning the "ADF Pad Assembly?

4. Is the final answer that this scanner is a POS and will never work
well in ADF mode?

Scanjet HP 3800 - automatic start E . Borgers 17:19:22
I've since a few months a new HP 3800 that works OK for its range.
I do not use it everyday.
However it seems that the supporting programs given by HP with the
scanner IMPOSE to Windows XP to turn the scanner on *as soon* as you
put your computer on (either after a real switching off or automatic
pause of the computer). After ten minutes of non-use of the scanner the
lamp turns off, but it's not really a good way to look at the use of a
scanner.
I explored the HP program and did not find a way to avoid this
annoying sequence. I prefer to be able to decide myself if the scanner
has to turn on when I need it.

Does somebody have a solution to alter the automatic switching on of
this HP 3800 scanner??
Thanks in advance for any clue.

Polaroid Sprintscan 35e Donhdoyle@Yahoo.Com 12:33:23
I bought a Polaroid SprintScan 35e years ago and now would like to make
it work with my new Dell Desktop which is running Windows XP

First, can this be made to work at all? Polaroid tells me I will need
a third party software download to make it work as they do not support
XP for their Sprintscan 35e.

Second, I will need a new scsi card; my adaptec does not fit the one
slot available to me.

Meanwhile, I have a flatbed Epson 1650 photo scanner. It has 1600 x
3200 dpi resolution. My old Sprintscan manual tells me it can scan at
72-1950 dpi & 72 - 3900 (interpolated)

Am I better off w my flatbed Epson? Should I not worry about the
SprintScan?

thanks
Don
