| PSU voltages 12v rail (multimeter and hmonitor disagree , also, 0.2 jumps). Q_q_anonymous@Yahoo.Co.Uk 13:38:57 |
| | Measuring with a multimeter, my PSU 12V rail varies between 11.4 and 11.6
According to hmonitor, it varies, says at around 11.4 mostly, , someitmes goes to 11.19, and for a few seconds, even down to 10.94 !!
When hmonitor says 10.94, my multimeter doesn't say . On my multimeter it's still between 11.4 and 11.6
5v rail is fine. multimeter reports 5.1, hmonitor reports 5.08
might all this indicate a bad or not good PSU? (potentially damaging my HDD and CD drive - since they use the 12V rail).
-- useful post PSU/Voltages in alt.comp.hardware.overclocking.amd shows normal ranges. though i think tolerances are a larger range. 10% for 12v, 5% for 5V - so says scott mueller's book and some posts on usenet.

| 64 bit help. Robin Gordon 04:34:01 |
| | i succummed to my friends opinions and decided to build a new pc. I was moving from XP2500+ (205FSB) and Nvidia 6800 (128) Graphics to Opteron 144 with ATI x850XT PE graphics. i used 2x 256 Corsair PC3200 ram to get me started. i'm using ah Hitachi 250GB harddrive. after getting the whole thing threw together i got a bitter disappointment, finding that all the benchmark progs say my old system was as fast as my new one. overclocking i can get the opty to 2.5GHz but games pause and creep and take an very long time to load. Even if i get killed and have to wait on the game reloading, it takes an absolute age. where am i going wrong. i even installed XP64 to get a little improvement but alas it is little. Do i need more ram or is the bottle neck somewhere else.
My specs are: Opteron 144 running at 2.5GHz Gigabyte K8n Sli mobo (f9 bios) Freezer Pro 64 artic cooling CPU cooler 512 MB Corsair pc3200 ddr400 ATi X850 XT PE (256MB) Hitachi TK250 HDD Windows XP64 SP1.
i have all the latest drivers, all 64 bit.

Ive got it at 2 ghz at 200fsb. But i want to knock the voltage down abit to reduce the cpu temp.
At the moment its 45c and Ambient in case of 25. Its got a nice big Zalman cooler on it. But i think the 1.7 colts iv'e got it at is alittle to much.
Anyone care to suggest some voltages to try that would be stable on that setup. Please fell free to throw some other ideas or voltages for other bits at me
Thanks.

| which ram to Conroe overclock? Jakob Harder 20:53:22 |
| | I'm receivin a E6300 Core 2 Duo ans an ASUS P5B next week.
How fast does the ram have to be to reach modest (not high because I don't want a very noisy cooling setup) overclocking results.
Can I pick up som cheap G.Skill PC5400 ram or does it have to be PC6400 ? I'm not up to date on how the ram "follows" the cpu when overclocking on this setup (my present is an old AMD Athlon setup).
And, by the way, anyone have links to an easy overclocking guide for conroe?

| Opteron - single dual core vs two single cores CharlesBlackstone 07:46:52 |
| | Hi, I'm about to buy a workstation, and wonder what the functional difference would be between getting a machine with two single-core processors, and a machine with one dual-core processor? Is it essentially the same thing, or are the two single-cores more independent in terms of function, memory access, etc. that would affect overall performance?
Thanks very much......

| Overclocking with a Stock HP Motherboard? Anonymous 16:09:01 |
| | Hi Folks,
I have an HP Pavilion ze4325us laptop; of course, since it's a complete package type system, the bios does not have any overclocking settings. The system has an AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2000+ chip and I'd like to overclock it without buying a new motherboard, power supply, memory, case, etc. Is there something mechanical that I can do to the motherboard (solder and wires) or some software way to overclock this chip with my current hardware?
Thanks!

| Athlon XP underclocking Ton Vermeulen 22:22:05 |
| | Hi folks,
Most of you are busy with overclocking; my Athlon XP 2800+ went underclocking all by itself. The system consists mainly of the following: MB MSI K4V-L (MS-6712), FSB 333 Mhz, BIOS AMI Version 07.00T Ram 512MB Kingston PC2700 CL=2.5 Video ATI Radeon 9600 Pro etc.
It worked for almost 2 years at normal CPU clock speed of 2083 Mhz with base clock 167 Mhz and multiplier 12.5x. Some time ago the processor clock fell back to 1090 Mhz; in first instance I noticed the multiplier had gone to 6.5x and could not be adjusted in the BIOS settings. It is locked. Recently I looked further and found that the CPUID data of the processor has been changed or maybe erased partly. Earlier the CPUID gave the processor type and model as: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ ('amdcpuid.exe' or comparable program). Now it is: AMD Athlon(tm) XP (without speed indication). This can also be seen in the CPUID register 80000003, which is empty except for the 'X' character (50) in eax of 80000003. The checksum (or whatever it may be) MSR C0010015 has been changed as well from 0000-0000-0303-1008 originally to 0000-0000-0703-1008. I flashed the BIOS with the latest available with no effect. Can anybody give me a hint about the possibility of resetting/reprogramming the CPUID data? I may also unlock the multiplier, but I rather avoid this. Thanks in advance, Ton (Gorinchem, Netherlands)

| Athlon x2 4800+ ? Larry Hodges 01:37:39 |
| | What I've got:
Athlon x2 4800+ 939, Toledo: https://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80728-R My mobo is an Abit KN8: http://abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=284 Ram is Patriot DDR400 stepping at 2-3-2-5. 2gigs
Ok. My BIOS allows me to change the CPU FSB clock, which is 200 by default. I've been told not to set this above about 205 or I can fry the CPU. Is that true? Got a recommended setting? CPU has stock cooling.
The multiplyer is changable, but is already maxed out at 12x.
I can adjust CPU core voltage. Also RAM voltage and Ref voltage. There is also nForce4 voltage and HyperTransport voltage.
Any recommendations?
-Larry

| Modified Bios for tweaking CPU & memory speed ? Uffe 01:18:16 |
| | While overclocking my new Athlon 64X2 4600+ on a MSI K8N Diamond (MS-7100) motherboard I'm restricted by the Bios offering only memory frequency values 200, 166, 133 and 100 MHz (besides some values above 200 MHz).
I'm able to run the cpu reliably at 2772 MHz (12x231), but for that I have to set the memory (2x512 MB) Kingston HyperX PC3200 at 166 MHz frequency. This means that the memory is effectively running at 184.8 MHz.
If I set the memory at 200 MHz it effectively would overclock to run at 231 MHz, but the memories won't accept that frequency, even if I relax the timings.
With my previous cpu (Athlon 64 300+ Winchester) I was able to run these memories reliably at 221 MHz, so I know I'm giving away memory performance with my present settings.
An ideal solution would be to find a possibility in Bios to set the memory frequency somewhere between 166 and 200 MHz.
Some time ago I came across some modified Phoenix-Award Bios versions offering various tweaking features not found in the official Bios versions. I just can't recall where/in which forum(s) such modified bios files can be found.
Any ideas?
Uffe
