| Repairing Windows 2000 Professional Guest 01:05:59 |
| | I have a legal copy of Windows 2000 Professional. I can find the install key or serial number or whatever they call it but not the CD.
Actually, it belongs to a friend who asked me to fix it for him. Something failed to exit on logout so his wife cut the power.
It refused to even go to safe mode when he passed it to me, but I got a DOS prompt and installed all the updates on a Feb 2004 CD from Microsoft (hoping that the corrupt file would be one of the files updated).
Now it can boot into safe mode, but not 'regular' and when it fails, it fails to identify the corrupt file.
All the web pages I looked at for the error message (KMODE_something) disagree on the cause, and offer fixes that require installing this file or that.
HOW can I obtain (without spending a fortune) a CD or CD image that will help me fix this? |

| vanguard.exe error on Linksys WPC11 v3 with Windows 2000 SP4 Spoonyfork 17:23:34 |
| | After installing the most recent driver from Linksys for the Linksys WPC11 v3 wireless NIC on my win2k laptop (sp4) on reboot I would get a message saying that vanguard.exe caused an error and a log was being created. vanguard.exe is located at "C:\Program Files\Linksys\Wireless Network PC Card". I searched the net and newsgroups and could only find one other similar question but no answers.
I was able to resolve this issue by stopping the NICSer_WPC11 service. Subsequent reboots no longer produced the vanguard.exe error. I could not find any information on what vanguard.exe or the NICSer_WPC11 service are supposed to do. The WPC11 works just fine without NICSer_WPC11 running. I hope this helps someone else.

| Netgear GA302T vs GA311 copper wire? Z Man 20:26:10 |
| | I just spoke with Netgear tech support in an effort to determine the difference between these two gigabit adapters. The tech support person informed me that the 302 can achieve speeds of 2000mbps over copper wire, while the 311 go up to only 1000mbps. My network has CAT5 and/or CAT5e cabling, and I am upgrading to gigabit switches ad adapters. Question: isn't all network cable made of copper? What does it mean when I am told that 'copper wire' can enable higher speeds? Should I buy new wire so that I can double my speed from 1000->2000mbps?

| HELP! Invisible checkmarks in checkboxes Axlq 00:24:50 |
| | Yesterday I noticed that checkboxes inside a list (such as in the Windows XP Disk Cleanup utility) are all invisible! I can toggle them but the checkmarks never appear. Checkboxes by themselves in a dialog work OK; just the ones contained in a list have invisible checkmarks.
To illustrate, see http://unicorn.us.com/alex/nocheckmark.gif (a small 19K screen capture showing the problem).
This picture shows the Windows XP Disk Cleanup utility. The 'Temporary Internet Files' box is checked, but the checkmark is invisible. You can tell it's checked because the total amount of disk space gained is shown as 866 KB, just like that checkbox. I can click on any of the boxes and the total at the bottom will change, but no checkmarks appear.
This happens on any program that has checkboxes in lists (such as SpyBot S&D advanced settings, when I first noticed this problem).
Three different spyware utilities (AdAware, SpyBot S&D, SpySweeper) indicate that I'm clean.
A registry cleaner (TweakNow RegCleaner) didn't help.
When I reboot into safe mode, everything works fine!
But then when I reboot back into normal mode, the problem reappears.
I'm running Windows XP, SP2.
The only thing I remember doing yesterday was to install the K-Lite codec pack, with the default settings. I can't imagine why that would create a problem. Uninstalling it didn't help. System restore is disabled on this machine.
Is there a corrupted DLL somewhere? Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong?
Thanks. Please reply to the newsgroup.
-Alex

| | Help!!!!!!!!!
My objective is to share a printer between two (2) desktop pc's , both running XP sp2. The printer is an Epson Stylus Color 777. (Hopefully to be replaced soon with Laser Printer???)
I purchased a Linksys printserver for USB with 4-port switch (Model PSUS4) and EtherFast 10/100 LAN cards with corresponding Cat5e cables.
Thus far, I've been able to get the Printserver setup from one PC and print. However, the 2nd PC won't find the printer during the Printserver setup. Something about a cable not connected or ????
I'm thinking maybe the LAN card in 2nd PC may not be seated properly??? I've already swithced cables and plugged into different 'slots' of the print server.
To digress a bit, I've found my McAfee Firewall has to be disabled in order for the 1st PC to print. Ultimately, this is not acceptable. Is there a solution where I can keep the firewall active? Both PC's have the McAfee software.
Last, (maybe first???) is it necessary to set up a workgroup or something to make the whole scheme feasable? Don't want to share internet connections, but might want to transfer some files back and forth, or even play games interactive.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Ace

| two routers in one network Charles MacLean 08:40:56 |
| | We need to install a second router (Linksys VP41) to establish a VPN router to router with a customer. Presently we have an Adtran 624 that doesn't support this type of connection so we have to add the second router (Linksys VP41) just for the router to router VPN with our customer. Adtran does our NAT and VoIP duties so it can't be replaced. Our network address is 192.168.2.0 and we are running 6 VPN client connections to other customers that are mapped to some of our public IP addresses. All clients on the LAN are connected to a single 3Com 48 port switch. All the workstations are XP Pro or Win2K Workstation. We have four servers with static IPs one of which is our DHCP server.
My question is does the network need to be subnetted so one router hands its traffic to the next. In this scenario I envision the default gateway for all the workstations and servers would be the Linksys 41s LAN IP address. The Linksys in turn would use the Adtran as its gateway which would be on a different subnet like 192.168.1.0. It in turn would route the traffic to the Internet over our T1.
The problem is as soon as I insert the Linksys between the switch and the Adtran all traffic to the Internet gets blocked. Is this correct logic? What an I doing wrong?

Any ideas about what caused that? As far as I can tell, there were no outages in the house and out building where the two reside. They are separated by 100' of ethernet cable.

| XP client of XP ICS master can only use the internet for Google! Guest 03:18:31 |
| | I have a weird problem here. I have two XP machines, one with a direct connection to the internet and the other is setup as an ICS client. You used to be able to browse just fine from the latter, but during the last few weeks the internet has stopped working. In the course of the investigation, I found something interesting - I can browse to any google page, can search for anything I want to google, but cannot click on any of the external links offered (though I can open an external content page if it is cached by google).
Both machines run XP Professional SP2 and are patched with critical updates. The ICS settings are correct on the client, and it is not a general network problem as when I plug my laptop into the cable that connects to the desktop client (that isnt working), the laptop can browse the internet fine.
I heard it might be a Winsock issue, but I ran a utility to check this and the results were fine. I also removed the computer from the workgroup and readded it to no effect. Finally, I uninstalled the network card and rebooted the pc to force it to reinstall, but this made no change either.
This is really weird, so any light that can be shed upon this would be much appreicated.
Thanks,
KC

| Lauching Notepad From Command Script Nem 00:23:03 |
| | Hi,
I wasn't sure which group(s) to post this question, so I've included two that I believe are general enough and I have set a Followup-To comp.os.ms-windows.misc. If there is a better group then the two I've provided, it would be most helpful if you could mention it in your reply.
I'm trying to launch Notepad from inside a BAT script and am running into a problem. Here's the deets...
Justification For Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notepad will be called from a BAT script followed by other commands, so it is necessary to start Notepad as an independent process. START seems to accomplish this with the /B switch, because if I used CALL it would halt the script until Notepad was closed. Later in the script TaskKill will be used to close Notepad.
Procedure For Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1) Open Command Prompt 2) type... START /B "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Notepad.exe" 3) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Windows Task Manager 4) Tab to the Processes list
Result From Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When I do the above procedure with WinXP, I see two "cmd.exe" in the processes list. One for the original command prompt that I opened in step #1 and the other for Notepad.exe as a result from step #2. Because Notepad isn't shown, there is no way for TaskKill to later close Notepad.
Question resulting from Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Is there a way to run Notepad from within a BAT script as a separate process and display the executable's filename, "Notepad.exe", instead of "cmd.exe" in the Task List?
Thanks,

| Losing http://www connection but can still send/receive email??? Shooter 20:21:26 |
| | I'm trying to deal with a problem that is getting more and more annoying on one of my XP computers. I keep losing access to the WWW via my browser (Firefox and IE), yet Email still comes and goes via Outlook. My 2nd computer (tied in to the same Linksys router) never loses its connection, and all of my IMs on that computer stay online. On this computer, I currently get "cannot connect to server" when I attempt to go to any web address - but I'm able to send this message. I can ping my router, but cannot browse to it. I can also ping websites from this computer, so that confirms that I do have Internet connectivity - plus I'm able to get Email. The only way I get http access again is to reboot. I have tried disabling/reenabling my network connection, and also tried to "Repair" the connection, neither of which have worked. I have run AdAware and Spybot as well as Norton AV scans. (Spybot and NAV run/monitor continuously). WindowsUpdate is up to date. I really don't understand what could cause this type of problem. Can anyone offer any insight?
Replies CC'd to sender (or Reply To All) would be GREATLY appreciated, so I'll see answers sooner. Also, if there is another NG which may be more appropriate for my question, please advise.
Thanx, Wm

| Specific IP data to a specific connection when multiple connections running Ahmad Humyn 02:37:22 |
| | Hello everyone
I am going through some trouble, which I cant figure out how to solve. I have a computer which I have to connect to a VPN through dial-up, which I havedone pretty easily. But I have to remotely access that same machine through LAN. The problem is that the machine when connected simultaneously to the LAN and the dial-up VPN, doesn't send the data to the VPN and recieve from it like it should, instead I think it directs the packets to the LAN.
But the good part of the problem (which I think will make it easier to solve!) is that when I use the dial-up to connect to the VPN, I just want communicate with a specific IP. I think the problem just boils down to how to send data directed to a specific IP to a specific network interface / connection.
Any ideas. Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

When viewing network pc's there is a long wait 10-15 seconds before I can see the shared folders.
With the xp firewall turned off there is no delay.
I have tried using the exceptions list and adding the other Pc's Tcp/ip addresses, but there is still a delay.
Can you explain why and a work around, without having to turn the firewall off?

| Strange errors in my D-Link DI-634M log today Don Naegele 16:05:59 |
| | Hi.
I have a D-Link DI-634M router.
While in my log today I noticed tons of errors, but everything is working perfectly.
I'm getting this every 3 to 7 seconds from 3 different IP addresses:
Dropped packet from 169.254.1.82 to 169.254.1.255 that was received from the wrong network interface (IP address spoofing)
The 3 IP addresses are 169.254.1.146, 169.254.1.82, and 169.254.1.188.
A call to D-Link suggested someone was accessing my router such as a neighbor. I don't think that's correct. I have WEP encryption set on all my devices, with a password none one could guess. I changed my SSID to something no one would guess. I have SSID broadcast disabled, and I use MAC filtering to only allow devices I've put in the router.
I did have FIOS TV installed the other day and they installed a Motorola NIM100 (Network Interface Module) in my home near the router. I'm new to this and can't find a manual for it.
I'm a bit lost when it comes to it's MAC address and IP stuff. The bottom of the NIM100 has a HFC MAC ID that ends in 87 and also says cLINK MAC ID and ends in 88. Does this mean it has two MAC addresses? Should I have both in my MAC filter list?
When I added both of those to my MAC filters in my router setup (and temporarly disabled MAC filters) I noticed my DHPC server assigned 3 IP's to my STBs (Set Top Boxes), so I wrote down those and added them to my MAC filters section to be safe and re-enabled MAC filtering.
After all that stuff everything seemed to work fine. I was NOT seeing any of these strange errors in my router log.
The only reason I even looked in the log yesterday was because our Xbox Live connection dropped at noon and I was trying to look for errors in the log. I then noticed the new errors.
So my point is I'm thinking these errors probably don't have anything to do with my new NIM100, but i'm not certain. I'm so new to networking that I understand VERY little.
I'm a bit nervous about calling FIOS since they do NOT want people using their own routers even though many online say they do just fine.
I'm so lost and feel that D-Link support was 'blowing me off'. It was suggested initially that my network was unsecure and he lead me through securing it, to which HE found out it WAS already secure.
Help.
I'm lost.
Don
p.s. Pardon the multiple posts. I'm not sure what newsgroup to ask for help in.

| Receive an incoming, it's "established", yet scan says "closed". MSN v8 !! Q Q Anonymous 08:03:56 |
| | Receive an incoming, it's "established", yet scan says "closed". This occurs with MSN v8 !! (it may be true since v6).
I've had ethereal running the whole time.
I've verified this in the following way..
a friend sent a large file . his ip is like 71.4.5.2
I look for all incoming connections, (my ip is 192.168.0.2) tcp.flags.syn == 1 && tcp.flags.ack==0 && ip.src != 192.168.0.2
And up comes that one, from my friend, 71.4.5.2:1118 TO 192.168.0.2:2344
so it's definitely an incoming connection and still running, you can tell from that display filter. I used in ethereal. (or perhaps i'm wrong?)
Now, I check on Netstat, (and "Active Ports"), That connection is still established
From 192.168.0.2, I run a port scan via grc.com. scanning (my) port 2344, it says "stealth" . my FW is off, so it's my NAT router blocking pings. Gibson's scanner isnt' getting through my router but my friend is. all he did was send a file through msn. Why isn't it open?!
I then try nmap from another computer on my LAN , it says Closed. (makes sense not to say stealth- it didn't go through my NAT router, and I had turned off the host based firewall on that machine. But, why isn't it open!
I check netstat and "active ports" again. The connection is established!! I'm not seeing things.
still the same connection 71.4.5.2:1118 TO 192.168.0.2:2344
I suppose something is not what it seems. I'll bet the router hasn't opened port 2344. I didn't tell it to, and i've seen the settings it has for msn, it didn't mention or include port 2344. Yet an incoming was still possible.
or so it seems. Am I missing something?
And I did ping it! If I use this display filter tcp.flags.syn == 1 && tcp.flags.ack==0 && tcp.dstport == 2344
it shows 2 packets. The incoming connection. And the packet from nmap that I sent from another computer on my LAN - which funnily enough said closed. (at a time when the connection was still established).
this really has me stumped,
thanks in advance

| | Hia,
I have a starnge problem:
We have a Linux PC in the office which has two network cards and me and a colleague connect our laptops through a switch to that Linux PC, effectively using it as a router.
From one day to another with for no apparent reason my network connection doesnt work anymore.
- My friends laptop still connects to the internet, mine using the exact same settings (other/same IP) wouldn't! - I have tried different IP's etc... - I can ping my frinds Laptop (from cmd) but not the router or any other outside IP! (The IP forwarding doesnt seem to work?) - If I run my laptop under linux everything works fine, so the network card should be fine. - I have downloaded the most recent driver from Acer, no effect.
Sorry guys I am running out of ideas! Any hint is more than welcome! THANKS!

| Networking problem Don W. McCollough 02:08:49 |
| | Hello. I am trying to get two computers networked. One is WinXP sp2 (DESKTOP PC) and the other is WinXP Pro (HTPC).
I run the network setup wizard for both machines and put the machines in the same workgroup.
My desktop computer sees my HTPC in the Network Places, but when I try to access shared folders, it halts saying " You might not have permission to access...."
My HTPC sees my desktop fine and I can access all the folders that I make shared.
For the life of me I can't get my Desktop to access (any) the folders on my HTPC.
Anybody have any pointers, advice?

| problem accessing network shares on Windows XP Pro Bn 02:05:00 |
| | Hi,
I've two PCs, ABC and XYZ, both are running Windows XP Pro, and both have simple file sharing disabled. And I want to share a folder on ABC, to be access from XYZ.
If I share the folder with permission for "everyone" (this is the default), then everything is fine. I can access it from XYZ without any problem.
However, if I remove the permission for "everyone" and add permission for a user on ABC, then I cannot access the share from XYZ. I can see the share on XYZ, but if I try to open it, I get the following message:
\\ABC\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied.
there was no prompt for username and password.
If I right-click on the share, then click on "Map network drive", then click on "different user name", and enter the username and password for whom I added permission on ABC earlier, then I get the following message:
The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password. To connect using a differnt user name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share.
I got this even though I didn't have it mapped or connected. What am I missing here ?
Thanks.

Wireless 1 can see shared folders and printers on the hardwire and visa versa. Wireless two cannot see any other computers on the network. All 3 computers can ping each other with IP addresses. Wireless one and Hardwire can ping each other by computer name. Wireless two cannot ping names of the other two. Workgroup name is the same for all. Firewalls have been disabled for all with no change in result. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I did search but could not find a solution although I presume this is not an unusual problem. Maybe I'm a bad searcher as well as a bad networker!

| USB-Stick writeproteced Gerd 00:32:55 |
| | Hi,
I have some trouble with my usb-stick. At the customers office I let the secretary print a few documents from the stick. I don't know what exactly she did, but now Windows (2k, XP) tells me that the stick is write protected (there is _no_ switch to physically protect it), and there is a file named "EA DATA. SF" that is locked by Windows. I never heared that windows uses a file with this name, and I don't know how to remove it. I even don't know how to write protect/unprotect an usb-stick on windows (at least if there is no hardware switch). And I don't understand why I can't remove the write protection while I'm logged in as administrator.
Can someone help me?
Thanks.
