| 4GB for "Sebring API" in a Thinkpad T42p??? Rmorguli 07:44:05 |
| | While doing something else in "Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs", I noticed a listing under "Currently Installed Programs" something called "Intel(R) Sebring API" using 4,095MB! That's no typo! This seems like alot, and, though the machine works fine, I can't help wondering if something's amiss. Searching for files/programs yields nothing much; same with Internet search. Anyone know what's going on? - - - Rich M.

| Thinkpad T60P Expansion Rom problem Hound 21:28:06 |
| | Hello all, wondering if anybody has a simmilar problem with the Intel Pro1000 Lan Card. I get an error messege at startup saying "Expansion Rom not initialized - PCI on MotherBoard, BUS:00 Device:00 Function:00"
I can get rid of this messege by Disabling the bootRom in the bios. but it seems either way the lan card won't work, it will sense the connection but will neither get a dhcp address, neither is I put static would it be able to communicate. I would appretiate any Input.
by the way tried it in both linux and windows.. still no good, and with and without the Access Connection.

TP A31p hangs sudenly jrohlicek 13:49:27 |
| | Hi guys,
I have IBM Thinkpad A31p runnig Win XP Pro, it worked fine till now. A few days ago it started hanging suddenly. It is always the same - all activity stops, it does respond not to mouse nor to the keyboard. The only thing I can do with it is to press On/Off switch for about 15 secs to switch it off. After that it boots OK but a bit longer than usually. It hangs going to sleep mode to and even shutting the Windows down. The only thing happend before this strange behaviour was that Java runtime update failed due to not enough space on disk. (Java is uninstalled now). Thank for any advice in advance.

| Please tell me I didn't hose my system board (eeprom error) Mark Mitchell 04:59:32 |
| |
Today when I powered up my thinkpad T20, I got an error message 0189: Invalid RFID Configuration Information Area.
According to the IBM website, that's an EEPROM checksum error.
Is there *any* solution short of replacing the MB?
If not, is MB replacement something I should think about doing myself (never done any serious disassembly of a laptop, but I'm comfortable with desktops/printers)?
I've seen the warning on the linux-thinkpad website about lm-sensors, but I never touched that. ВAll I've done with the machine since I got it a week or two ago is install win ME, slackware-current, bought and installed a new battery, and I was working on getting linux working with my Linksys WPC54GS cardbus wireless network card. ВIt was working fine, powered it down this morning, powered it up a couple hours later and I get the error. ВWhat the hell happened?!?!?!?
Thanks, Mark-- Remove both wrongs to make the email address right.

| Activate Closed Captioning with DVDExpress Cat 09:29:36 |
| | I have a Thinkpad T23 (os: Win2000, sp3) with a DVD/CDRW combo. I use the preloaded DVD player (Mediamatics DVDExpress v5.01.04.09) to play DVDs. The problem? I can't seem to turn on closed captioning if there isn't any subtitles on the DVD. I'm talking about the white-text-on-black-background captions that you get when you activate closed-captioning on the tv set. There is an option on the shortcut menu; it's just not active.
Doing some searching on the IBM site, I find the following item: Closed caption option grayed out in DVD Express Windows NT and Windows 2000 (link: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1MIGR-4K9UYK) However, I can't get the web page, because the link points to a null pointer somewhere on the website. From what I read in the little blurb, there is no fix. Is it true? I'd even download the current version of the dvd player if it helps.
Otherwise, what other software players support closed captioning in Windows 2000? The current versions of WinDVD and PowerDVD require a Pentium 4. The affected computer is a 1.13ghz Pentium 3 with 256mb of ram. I'll take an older version if it's still available. Thanks for reading.

| T20 heatsink fan Skou 12:04:01 |
| | Is there a way to manually (or through the OS) to control the fan? My T20 is overheating, and locking up. I've had others that don't have this issue, but this one locks up, every so often. I've already removed the T20 stock fan, and the rubber pad, and replaced them with a T22 fan and used AS5 thermal grease. (Which I always do, for better cooling.)

| t30 Western Digital WD800UE does not power up (spin) Guest 21:06:25 |
| | I have a T30. The original hard drive works fine, its just too small so I bought a Western Digital WD800UE, slid it into the drive bay and it does not sound as if its spinning up. The BIOS does not recognize a drive in the bay. The WD800UE is a 5 vdc 0.50amp 80 gigbyte drive. jumpers set to master. I have updated the BIOS, CHIP SET SUPPORT, and run the hard drive firmware utility and still nothing. In fact the hdfw software did not see the drive either.
I look forward to hearing from someone with some ideas on this. Thanks in advance.

| Thinkpad boot-block BIOS? Patrick Flaherty 10:26:39 |
| | Hi,
Does the Thinkpad (mine's a T43) have a BIOS boot-block for recovering from a bad flash?
As in:
http://www.wimsbios.com/HTML1/faq.html#q9
I've extracted my BIOS and run phnxdebo on it. Among other things it says:
C:\BIOS\Phnxdeco>phnxdeco bios.bak -l phnxdeco bios.bak -l
-=PhoenixDeco, version 0.31 (DOS)=-
Filelength: 100BEC (1051628 bytes) Filename: bios.bak PhoenixBIOS hook found at: EF260 System Information at: EF287 BootBlock: 10000 bytes BankSize: 1024 KB Version: 1YET59WW Start: E83DD Offset: F0000 BCP Modules: 102 BCPFCP: 1A01B FCP 1st module: 6325 (16325) Released: 07 November 2005 at 14:40:06
which would seem to indicate that there is a boot-block. But if that's the case, and there's an associate recovery mechanism, documentation on such sure isn't easy to find.

| Battery - What price should I ask? Jim 20:08:00 |
| | While I was out at sea several months ago, I asked my wife to order a new battery for my R40 Thinkpad . Apparently for some reason or other the wrong battery was ordered/shipped, and since it has been over 90 days since we received it, IBM won't take it back. The one they shipped is:
FRU PN 92P0989 ASM PN 92P0990
I paid $145.00 for the thing, what would be a fair price to ask for it say on Ebay or in a local ad? Any suggestions appreciated.
Funny part, the thing looks identical to the R40 battery, but in one dimension it must be only 1 mm or so different in size, it just won't quite fit in the slot.
Also, while on the subject of batteries, I see there is some company in Hong Kong advertising cut rate batteries for Thinkpads, probably 1/3 or less than IBM asks for theirs. Has anyone tried one of these chinese copies, and if so, what kind of service have you had from them?
My original R40 battery when new got about 4.5+ hours runtime and has now dropped down to about 2 hours, so figure it's time for a new backup. My conscience says to buy from IBM direct but the cheapskate in me is saying try one of the Hong Kong knockoffs. Any suggestions?

| Bluetooth - how do I switch it on? (new T60) Ship 09:28:24 |
| | Hi
I cant get my Bluetooth working on my new T60/Windows XP & all the latest patches.
The BlueTooth icon is there on my task bar - bottom right - the bit that shows everything that is running....
But I cant get it to pick up either mhy HP 460 printer, nor my mobile phone, nor my mobile phone's headset!
If I click on the icon, all I get is "Bluetooth device not found".
Is there some physical switch I need to switch (like there is for the Wireless stuff...?
- Any thoughts?
With thanks

| | Hi
My mouse keeps selecting things I dont want it to...! Any suggestions?
I think it's when I leave it hovering over something. When I say mouse I really mean the pointer arrow thing that I am moving with that red rubber nipple thing in the middle of the keyboard.
I THINK it's probably some mouse setting that I've set by mistake.
Any ideas?

| Can't Install Sound Driver for T42 Nello Lucchesi 20:31:08 |
| | For some reason, the only sound I get on my IBM ThinkPad T42 running WinXP SP 2 is the "beep." Sound was working fine for the last year until a Windows Update about a month ago.
The Control Panel for "Sounds and Audio Devices" shows no playback devices (under the Audio tab) and Device Manager lists only the following under "Sound, video and game controllers": Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices Video Codecs
So, I figured that all I need to do is re-install my sound card driver. I went to IBM's support site:
http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/en/finders?pg=ddfinder
It auto-detected my system and referred me to:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-61604
I downloaded the driver and followed the installation instructions:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1ga241ww.exe
However, when the installer finishes, I get the message:
"Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again."
Unfortunately, I get the same message after rebooting.
Apparently, I'm not the only person having problems installing SoundMAX drivers:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-14328-audio-drivers-not-found.html
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/drivers/22991-cant-find-driver-2.html http://forums.windrivers.com/printthread.php?t=73987
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_audio&message.id=4736
While it is comforting to find others having this problem, none of their proposed solutions helped me get my sound working.
Things I've tried include:
Upgraded all drivers to their current versions using ThinkVantage Software Installer; Flashed BIOS with most recent version; Re-set BIOS to default to make sure that audio hardware is detected; Deleted one or more items listed in the Control Panel for "Sounds and Audio Devices" (see list above) to get XP to autodetect the sound card hardware; and Manually installed driver using Device Manager.
I still have no sound other than, "beep"!
I tried the PC Doctor hardware check that came with the laptop and runs in DOS7 (?). It says there is no audo hardware. But, it lets me play any frequency on the speaker. Others who have had this problem (see links above) have also reported that DOS diagnostics reported no audio hardware but they subsequently were successful at installing the SoundMAX driver and got their sound working again.
So, does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anyway that I can IBM to diagnose/fix with this...even for a fee?
Thanks for reading my tale of woe. Any suggestions are appreciated.
