| PCI Video card on PCI Express motherboad? Tungley@Spamfree.Bellsouth.Net 03:20:47 |
| | Quick question -- If I buy a new motherboard which has PCI Express video (no AGP slot), will a regular PCI video card work in one of the other PCI slots as an alternative to using the PCI Express slot (i,e, will I get video)? I'm thinking of a way to avoid buying a new video card right away if I happen to buy a board with no onboard video and no AGP slot for my current card)
Thanks

| Coincidence? Samsung HD failure Guest 06:44:01 |
| | I just put an Enermax Liberty PSU into my PC (AMD Duron, ECS K7S5A MB, 1GB RAM) and next day started getting SMART error warnings from the BIOS on boot up. Luckily everything is backed up but I'm wondering is this just a coincidence? The drive is a Samsung SP1203N and is 3 years old.

| Any other way to recover a HDD which is freezing the system? Spinrite says it will take 584 hours! Jonathan 01:46:27 |
| | Dead Maxtor HDD. Powermax confirms it can see it, says there's drive error. Oddly, SMART reports OK. But I have only been able to get tools to see this drive by booting PC, then removing cable from HDD *just* after the POST beep, then reconnecting cable as soon as CD spins. Otherwise, the HDD activity light stays on and nothing happens.
Spinrite wants 584 hours (584 hours = 3.47619048 weeks - thanks google!) and counting, Disk Commander freezes for 10 minutes at a time.
Is there any more "rough and ready" recovery tool? The data isn't valuable enough to pay ?100's to a specialist firm, but we'd like as much of it back as possible for historical reasons!
Chkdsk strangely doesn't see the drive, nor does fdsk or indeed anything except spinrite and Disk Commander, mainly because it seems the drive doesn't have a letter. However, I CAN see correctly named directories and files, in amongst the guff, via some browsing (but not recovering) tool.
Thanks

| undetected harddrive in win xp Richie2k5 00:21:03 |
| | my brother tried downloading an upgrade for his Norton Security software on his win xp, which has expired. but was then told to install something thats missing which linked him to the Microsoft Website. once he downloaded it his computer crached. now his BIOS does not recognize his harddrive. each time he restarts the memory count runs but then pauses for sometime, but then coutinues as:
Detecting IDE drives.... Primary master: none primary slave: none
The screen then moves normal. then the screen says:
Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter.
I swapped the hard drive with one that has win xp, and then the OS opens to it's desktop. i know now the harddrive controller is good.
I restarted the computer with the win xp cd, and tried going into the repair windows option srceen to see if it can see the hard drive. the screen showed:
Setup didnot find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
My brother haven't backup any of his inportant files in over a month, and doesnot want to lose them. is it possible to bring back this hard drive alive .
thanx for any help in advance.

| Computer Headaches Adam Leinss 23:23:37 |
| | Hi guys.
I recently installed a watercooling kit from Danger Den that leaked coolant all over my motherboard and adapter cards. This kit kept leaking, so I pulled it all out. In the process of trying to remove the waterblock from the CPU, I bent the pins off the CPU. So I went to Newegg and ordered another CPU chip (P4-478-3GHZ). Put the chip in and powered the system on...only powers on for 2 seconds and shuts off. Narrowed the problem down to being the motherboard so I ordered a new Asus P4S800D-X from Newegg.
Got the system all together last night and booted it up...worked great for 3 hours and then the video all went to hell. I updated the video drivers and once I rebooted the system never POSTed again. Grabbed another AGP card from my other system and it booted just fine. I figure the coolant burned this card out as well (it is a Asus 128 MB 9280S AGP card).
So....I went to CompUSA this morning and got a cheap Geforce 5200FX AGP card, 128MB. Throw in it my machine and it will POST ok. However, when it gets past the BIOS I get either a "Out of Range" message, a black system (system doesn't boot) or the graphics are all distorted. I put this 5200FX AGP card into my other system and it works fine. I took the 64MB Geforce2 card and placed it into my system and it works fine?!?! However, it is no where as crisp as my other card as I was hooking it up via DVI and now I'm using VGA.
Any ideas? BIOS appears to be flashed to the latest version.

| Problem adding new SATA Controller Paul 20:09:55 |
| | Hi Guys
Having run out of space on my main SATA RAID drives I decided to add a new, much larger drive - also a SATA.
I want to keep the original configuration but *simply* add a new drive.
My motherboard (ASUS A7N8X-E) is home for the original RAID drives and has only two SATA connectors so I have bought a PCI SATA card for the new drive - the card is a Promise SATA300 TX2+, the new disk is a Maxtor Diamondmax 250Gb.
Now, I have installed the drive and the card and get problems as follows:
If I power up the drive and connect it to the card I get a message from the new controller card during the boot sequence saying 'IDE Bus Enabled' and then nothing, it just hangs.
If I try booting without the disk attached to the card I get a message 'No device is found, BIOS is not installed' and then it hangs.
As I can't get as far as Windows XP loading, I have not yet installed any drivers that came with the card - do you think I need to do this first?
Is there something I'm missing? The controller card is supposed to be PnP so I thought this would be simple........
Any help would be very gratefully received - thanks in advance!
Paul

| scanners and dust Falco98 10:11:29 |
| | Ok, I have a scanner I'm pretty happy with overall (canon 8400F).. it's been a few weeks (maybe a few months) since i've used it, and just now I notice there are a few pieces of dust INSIDE the scan bed glass. Of course I haven't taken it apart or anything (one would figure they'd take greater steps to prevent this). My main question is: what, if anything, can be done about this?
Also, what have people found to be the best normal method by which to remove dust from the top of the glass? Any cloths / tissues I've tried usually deposit back more dust or fiber than they were employed to remove in the first place... I'm thinking of trying swiffer cloths or something, but i'd worry perhaps that something like that might have undesired effects (i.e. a residue or something).
Thanks for any thoughts... ~Mike

| newegg signs u up for a 1 yr subs to PC Mag??! Guest 07:30:55 |
| | I ordered a DVD burner on newegg today. At the last step of checkout it said.... <snip> "Included with your purchase is a 1-year subscription to PC Magazine (or Electronic Gaming Monthly) -- a $9.97 value. You will receive 1 year of PC Magazine with no obligation to continue. If you do not agree to receive this offer, you have the option to request a refund of the subscription value. Accepting this offer will not affect the price you pay at checkout. Limit 1 subscription per household."
[Check box]
"I agree to receive this offer and to have Newegg.com provide my information to Ziff Davis Media." <snip>
I didn't check the checkbox. The 9.97 was not included in the amount charged to me.. Now the question is this. How does this work? Did newegg send my billing info to PC Mag and they will charge me in 1yrs time.. Or did they charge me already.. If not what is this refund request about? Has anyone gone through this before?

| Clone Drive Does Not Have All The Bytes BobN 22:24:57 |
| | I am running Windows XP Home SP2.
My C: drive is a WD, EIDE, 20Gb, single partition, FAT 32 containing some 8 Gb of data.
The clone drive is as above in an external enclosure connected through the USB port.
I usually clone the C: drive about once a month using Retrospect Express. No errors are reported. By chance, I compared the two drives and found that the clone drive contains only some 6 Gb of data. I do not know where the other bytes are. I notice that the clone drive has no "My Documents" folder or Recycle Bin, neither of which contains more than a few Mb of data on my C: drive. All the other folders and files seem to be there, but I am coming up short 2 Gb.
Can anyone provide an explanation?
TIA

| With existing RAID, how to jumper extra IDE drives? Andrew J . Rozsa 22:23:00 |
| | I am starting with 865PEDAP MoBo and a SATA RAID already installed and functioning properly. The RAID is connected via PCI SATA Adapter. The system is booting on the RAID (OS is XP-SP2). I am adding drives from previous system. These are ATA IDE drives. If I leave the RAID alone, how do I jumper the additional IDE drives (drives 3 & 4)? The 2 IDE drives are 10-pin drives so they can be set to Dual Slave. Also, on the MoBo one of the IDE connectors is red and the other is white. Any significance to the color? Does it matter which do I plug where? A floppy drive is already connected to the red IDE connector.
Sure would appreciate help with this. My son is "inheriting" the old Dell and is nagging me to death to finish the "homebrew project." Best,
Andrew

| GA-M59SLI-S5 won't boot Matt Casella 01:25:47 |
| | Here's my setup, everything is "new" ordered from newegg
Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 motherboard AMD64 x2 4600+ Apevia (Aspire) X-Plorer ATX APEVIA (ASPIRE) X-Plorer ATXB8KLW-AL/ 420W Power Supply 2 GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 800
I've plugged in the 24 pin main power connector, but it seems my power supply only has a 4 pin 12v. Do I need to buy a 4 to 8 pin adapter? Or a new power supply (I kind of have the feeling now that 420W might seem kinda small for my setup).
Other than that, is there any easy way that I can tell whether the problem is in the PSU or if the motherboard was DOA?? All I can say is that I feel the motherboard start to get warm when everything is plugged in. No LCD, fans, or any beeps, etc when I turn on the power. I was planning on buying a DMM, but don't have one right now.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

| ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Wont Boot or Beep Colin Steadman 01:25:31 |
| | I've just bought a ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 and a AMD 939 4400+ X2 processor. I've taken out my old mobo and processor from my PC and installed the new ones. I then took the memory out of the old mobo and stuck it in the AsRock and installed the graphics card (and of course the mobo power, speaker and case panel leads ect).
This should have been enough to boot, however when I powered it up nothing happened. The case, cpu and graphics card fans all spin up so the mobo is getting power. However I dont get anything on the monitor or any beeps on the speaker.
The mobo manual does not have a trouble shooting section so I dont know what to try next. Could anyone suggest what may be the problem or what I could do to diagnose it?
TIA,
Colin

| ASUS / Pentium D overheating & other problems DustWolf 00:57:28 |
| | Hello,
I got here a brand new system with Pentium D (2core) 3 GHz and ASUS motherboard (P5LD2, intel chipset) / graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT).
The system was originaly shipped here with a broken PSU, outdated BIOS and no fans short of the CPU one. I've added a rear 12 cm fan sucking air out (with a spin regulator set so it's not too noisy), got the PSU replaced, updated the BIOS, and later added an extra 9 cm fan to blow cold air towards the CPU fan and memory chips from outside.
I am testing the computer in regulated temperature environment at a stable 23?°C.
The thing is... 1. The ASUS hardware monitoring software always crashes if started at bootup (and occasionally inbetween too) I updated the BIOS and the ASUS software to fix that, but most of the crash-situations remain (the monitoring software starts running really slow, like one window update per minute, and End Task doesn't make it go away). Also, with this new P5LD2 BIOS from the ASUS website, the "System Monitor" area in the BIOS doesn't work anymore (tho the Windows-based monitoring software works a bit better). 2. When the computer comes back from being idle a long time, the taskbar area is black and doesn't redraw unless clicked upon. 3. The motherboard temperature is 40?°C... it was 46?°C before I installed the extra 9 cm fan. 4. The CPU idle temperature is 50?°C ... 60?°C before I installed the extra 9 cm fan and it skyrockets if the CPU is in use. This is while Not using the ASUS AI NOS feature or otherwise overclocking the CPU.
Is all of this normal / to be expected?
The ASUS PC Probe || monitoring software declares the motherboard over 45?°C and CPU over 60?°C as warning temperatures. Is this reasonable?
I would like to bring down the temperature of the CPU to something that wouldn't cause all off the alarms going off durring normal usage, however I already installed all the possible fans around it. What can I do to bring down it's temperature further?
