| Ignoring racial HD? Laszlo 08:42:30 |
| | Warning to anyone prone to using the word "roll-player": this is a "game mechanics" post. I have no problem with you playing as you like, and I do not intrude on your role-playing threads with min/max advice. Please consider refraining from yammering on about how weak characters can be interesting (in this thread, at least); we all know this, and I've seen the resulting flame- war one too many times already.
To the point. Looking over the MM, it seemed painfully obvious to me that power-wise, no race with racial HD is really worth playing (as racial Hit Dice tend to suck mightily). Since these races also have hefty LA penalties, I'm wondering what would happen if I simply eliminated the "racial Hit Dice" rule, and allowed people to play, for instance, a level 2 Doppelganger character who was ECL 6, and had no racial Hit Dice.
A possible optional modification would be requiring all races to have class levels at least equal to the racial Hit Dice listed for them in the MM; by this rule, no Doppelganger below ECL 8 would exist, but an ECL 8 Doppelganger could have, for instance, 4 levels of Wizard.
I don't think this would be at all unbalanced (in fact, I suspect high LA races would still be rather weak), but I'm curious whether anyone else has thought about (or preferably, tried) this.
Laszlo

In it, Beatriz Marinello says that she resigned as USCF Scholastic Director in protest of the decision to settle the suit by the USCF against Richard Peterson.
At that time, I was defending Beatriz from attacks by Peterson. Perhaps it is time to take another look at this situation.

| Clarification.... Cameron 00:33:53 |
| | I installed Knights 0.6 and crafty 19.8 the other day. I was playing and I moved my white pawn from c2 to c4 and computer moved its pawn from black d4 to black c3, (I have never attempted to talk chess moves - am I suppose to refer to all moves from a single side - use white's number's for black's moves or refer to everything from each color's perspective?), taking my pawn, (which was on c4). Since these pawns were side by side I did not think this was a legal move.
Is this a bug or a chess rule that I am unaware of, (obviously I don't play much chess)? If it is a bug does anyone know of a way to dump out this particular game so that I can send some useful debugging information to the maintainers of crafty?
Thanks
-Cam

| Rome Total War Wylie Wild 21:06:20 |
| | Hello there,
I'm stuck somewhere in the pacific at the moment and dun access to a good computer... just wondering whether anyone here has played Rome Total War?
I was totally blown away by Shogun total war when it first came out but I was a little disappointed by Medieval Total war- I even bought the MTW Viking expansion pack but didnt play it.
So how is RTW? I wasn't a big fan of the close-in zoom function - I prefer the big scope but smooth playability.

| Heroes 3: The Shadow of Death - help running program in XP Vader des Vaderlands 00:54:27 |
| | I installed Heroes of Might & Magic 3: The Shadow of Death last night -an upgrade from the standard Restoration of Erathia, but I have been unable to find a way to run the program under Windows XP with SP2. I tried the various compatiblity settings under the properties for the executeable to no avail. I still receive an error message whenever I attempt to launch the game. Has any one had success in getting HoMM3: SoD to run under XP with SP2? I had HoMM3 plain running earlier but perhaps I've overlooked some technique I used to get it running in XP. Any tips on what you've done to get either SoD or RoE to run would be appreciated.

| Need advice Guest 23:43:21 |
| | Hi. You guys were very helpful with my wizard (who ended up ascending) a few months ago, so I thought I'd ask for help again. I'm playing an Archeologist, the first time I've gotten this far with one, so I don't know what to expect at the quest. I've also never been to Ludious (I think).
My problem is that I got pretty far down in the dungeon (DL24), and have just reached XL 14 by eating a yummy wraith, BUT I haven't been able to find a source of reflection, or magic resistance, or a bunch of other stuff I want, like conflict or levitation or magic markers or decent attack wands or lots of enchant scrolls. No "oLS either, or rather, I already used up the only one I found (oops). Nor have I been able to find decent spellcasting armor, which hardly matters since I'm so lousy at spells anyway, and the only attack spellbooks I found are Force Bolt (eh) and Finger of Death (which of course I can't cast). I do have the +5 Mjollnir (nice) and the Vorpal Blade (useless so far as I can see), and speed boots.
My stats are: HP 167, AC -12 (including 9 protection pts), XP 14. Fire, cold, and poison resistant (and that's it).
Should I go on? Nothing is a match for me where I am, but I'm scared to descend further without MR or reflection. I might be able to find useful armor (which I sorely need!) at Ludious, but I'm scared of wands of death there. How hard is the quest? I could probably handle Medusa (blindfold + mirror), but I don't think I can get to her -- I stupidly had my c?oT uncursed, and I don't see any other means.
What's the alternative to going on? I guess I can go over the few remaining fountains and quaff each one until dry, hoping for a wish (have done a lot of that already, no luck so far -- and no smoky potions, no magic lamps, no throne wishes, no nuthin). But then I won't have anything left for blanking scrolls. I can camp at the altar I converted and keep praying for goodies (but it won't help with what I most need). Is there anything else you can suggest?
