| Onkyo TX-906 Robert McIntosh 16:45:49 |
| | I purchased an Onkyo TX-906 stereo receiver off of eBay - no manual or remote control. I found a manual online but it does not answer the problem to my dilemma.
How do I adjust the volume for the remote speakers?
It's got two sets of speakers labelled "Main" and "Remote" (what would normally be labelled "A" and "B"). I can control the main set of speakers with the master volume, but the remote speakers do not respond to it.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks! Robert

| Audio interfaces with robust preamps Colin Henein 11:30:30 |
| | Simple Question:
What reasonably priced audio interfaces (usb, usb2, or firewire) have the most gain-boosting mic preamps?
Back Story:
I have just bought a Studio Projects LSD2 microphone. (It's a stereo microphone with adjustable angle between 2 vertically coincident condenser elements.) My plan is to use it to record live concerts using mid-side or blumlein techniques. I had planned to get a firewire or USB audio interface with microphone preamps and go mobile with my iBook for recording.
The problem I have run into is that the audio interfaces I've tried can't give me enough gain to get anything out of this microphone for room recording. In order to get half-decent levels I have to crank the gain up to at least 90%. Somewhere around 85% gain the interfaces I've tried produce a lot of noise, and some high-pitched hum as well.
I've tested the mic on an old and bulky analog Yamaha mixing board that does phantom power. It works fine, and the board's gain knob only needs to be turned to about 50% to get great whole-room levels. No noise. No hum. So it doesn't seem to be the microphone. It seems to be the interface. I don't want to carry the bulky board to concerts though.
The two interfaces I've tried are the M-Audio Firewire 410 and the PreSonus FireBox. The 410 was a poorly designed piece of crap with bad software. The PreSonus was ok. Neither could boost the volume of the microphone without maxing out their respective pre-amps and introducing unacceptable amounts of noise.
Is there an interface out there that has onboard preamps with the power to boost the LSD2 to the point that I can reliably use this as a room mic? I really hadn't budgeted for a separate mic pre at this point.

| YOU MUST KNOW THIS MAN Guest 10:58:07 |
| | MUHAMMAD (May peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him) You may be an atheist or an agnostic; or you may belong to anyone of the religious denominations that exist in the world today. You may be a Communist or a believer in democracy and freedom. No matter what you are, and no matter what your religious and political beliefs, personal and social habits happen to be - YOU MUST STILL KNOW THIS MAN!
He was by far the most remarkable man that ever set foot on this earth. He preached a religion, founded a state, built a nation, laid down a moral code, initiated numberless social and political reforms, established a dynamic and powerful society to practice and represent his teachings, and completely revolutionized the worlds of human thought and action for all times to come.
HIS NAME IS MUHAMMAD, peace and blessings of Almighty God be upon him and he accomplished all these wonders in the unbelievably short span of twenty-three years.
Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him was born in Arabia on the 20th of August, in the year 570 of the Christian era, and when he died after 63 years, the whole of the Arabian Peninsula had changed from paganism and idol-worship to the worship of One God; from tribal quarrels and wars to national solidarity and cohesion; from drunkenness and debauchery to sobriety and piety; from lawlessness and anarchy to disciplined living; from utter moral bankruptcy to the highest standards of moral excellence. Human history has never known such a complete transformation of a people or a place before or since!
The Encyclopedia Britannica calls him "the most successful of all religious personalities of the world". Bernard Shaw said about him that if Muhammad were alive today he would succeed in solving all those problems which threaten to destroy human civilization in our times. Thomas Carlysle was simply amazed as to how one man, single-handedly, could weld warring tribes and wandering Bedouins into a most powerful and civilized nation in less than two decades. Napoleon and Gandhi never tired of dreaming of a society along the lines established by this man in Arabia fourteen centuries ago.
Indeed no other human being ever accomplished so much, in such diverse fields of human thought and behavior, in so limited a space of time, as did Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him. He was a religious teacher, a social reformer, a moral guide, a political thinker, a military genius, an administrative colossus, a faithful friend, a wonderful companion, a devoted husband, a loving father - all in one. No other man in history ever excelled or equaled him in any of these difficult departments of life.
The world has had its share of great personalities. But these were one sided figures who distinguished themselves in but one or two fields such as religious thought or military leadership. None of the other great leaders of the world ever combined in himself so many different qualities to such an amazing level of perfection as did Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him.
The lives and teachings of other great personalities of the world are shrouded in the mist of time. There is so much speculation about the time and the place of their birth, the mode and style of their life, the nature and detail of their teachings and the degree and measure of their success or failure that it is impossible for humanity today to reconstruct accurately and precisely the lives and teachings of those men.
Not so this man Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him. Not only was he born in the fullest blaze of recorded history, but every detail of his private and public life, of his actions and utterances, has been accurately documented and faithfully preserved to our day. The authenticity of the information so preserved is vouched for not only by faithful followers but also by unbiased critics and open-minded scholars.
At the level of ideas there is no system of thought and belief-secular or religious, social or political-which could surpass or equal ISLAAM- the system which Muhammad peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him propounded. In a fast changing world, while other systems have undergone profound transformations, Islaam alone has remained above all change and mutation, and retained its original form for the past 1400 years. What is more, the positive changes that are taking place in the world of human thought and behavior, truly and consistently reflect the healthy influence of Islam in these areas. Further, it is not given to the best of thinkers to put their ideas completely into practice, and to see the seeds of their labors grow and bear fruit, in their own lifetime. Except of course, Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him, who not only preached the most wonderful ideas but also successfully translated each one of them into practice in his own lifetime. At the time of his death his teachings were not mere precepts and ideas straining for fulfillment, but had become the very core of the life of tens of thousands of perfectly trained individuals, each one of whom was a marvelous personification of everything that Muhammad peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him taught and stood for. At what other time or place and in relation to what other political, social, religious system, philosophy or ideology-did the world ever witness such a perfectly amazing phenomenon?
Indeed no other system or ideology secular or religious, social or political, ancient or modern - could ever claim the distinction of having been put into practice in its fullness and entirety EVEN ONCE in this world, either before or after the death of its founder. Except of course ISLAAM, the ideology preached by Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him which was established as a complete way of life by the teacher himself, before he departed from this world. History bears testimony to this fact and the greatest skeptics have no option but to concede this point.
In spite of these amazing achievements and in spite of the countless absolutely convincing and authentic miracles performed by him and the phenomenal success which crowned his efforts, he did not for a moment claim to be God or God's incarnation or Son - but only a human being who was chosen and ordained by God to be a teacher of truth to man kind and a complete model and pattern for their actions.
He was nothing more or less than a human being. But he was a man with a noble and exalted mission-and his unique mission was to unite humanity on the worship of ONE AND ONLY GOD and to teach them the way to honest and upright living in accordance with the laws and commands of God. He always described himself as A MESSENGER AND SERVANT OF GOD, and so indeed every single action and movement of his proclaimed him to be.
A world which has not hesitated to raise to Divinity individuals whose very lives and missions have been lost in legend and who historically speaking did not accomplish half as much-or even one tenth-as was accomplished by Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him should stop to take serious note of this remarkable man's claim to be God's messenger to mankind.
Today after the lapse of some 1400 years the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him, have survived without the slightest loss, alteration or interpolation. Today they offer the same undying hope for treating mankind's many ills which they did when Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him, was alive. This is our honest claim and this is the inescapable conclusion forced upon us by a critical and unbiased study of history.
The least YOU should do as a thinking, sensitive, concerned human being is to stop for one brief moment and ask yourself: Could it be that these statements, extraordinary and revolutionary as they sound, are really true? Supposing they really are true, and you did not know this man Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him or hear about his teachings? Or did not know him well and intimately enough to be able to benefit from his guidance and example? Isn't it time you responded to this tremendous challenge and made some effort to know him? It will not cost you anything but it may well prove to be the beginning of a completely new era in your life.
Come, let us make a new discovery of the life of this wonderful man Muhammad, peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon him the like of whom never walked on this earth, and whose example and teachings can change YOUR LIFE and OUR WORLD for the better. May God shower His choicest blessings upon him!

| DigiTech JamMan Looper Software Guest 14:11:30 |
| | I purchased a JamMan a month ago and am having a great time with it, but it is hard to manage the loops and keep track of where things are. So, given that I write software for a living, I've written an app to manage it through a PC. The app has tremendously enhanced the value of the JamMan and I think others would appreciate it too.
I've got a number of features built-in, such as drag-and-drop between the loop library and the device, custom naming of loops (not just "Loop1," "Loop2," etc.), customization of all loop parameters from on-screen (including Tempo in beats-per-minute), creation and updating of the loop.xml and loop.wav files, etc. It works with multiple cards and just makes things so much easier. If you're looking to set things up for a performance, having a printed sheet cross-referencing loops and titles is great, as well as being able to swap out libraries at will.
I'm really interested in what other features you would want to see in it. I'm going to have a version out for review in the next few weeks.

| oktava microphones opinions Marc Amsterdam 07:30:49 |
| | yesterday one of the muso's came up with a russian made oktava mk012. Having only known the brand by fame i was pleased to have an opportunity to try one
I compared them to a neumann KM140 and a KM184 and expectations were above and beyond!! smaart measurement (which only gave an indication) and then putting it in front of a nylon string acoustic guitar. i was sold and used the oktava during show as well, it sounded brilliant.
today i went to the oktava web site to check out prices and i was even more stunned, $299.- for a three capsule microphone that easily stood the comparison to a $1200.- neumann is just unimaginable.
So where is the catch i wonder? Iis it made in russian goelags without the burden of paying employees? do they use child labour? are russian employees this low paid?
the one issue i found on the web was that there are chinese made fakes w/o serial number and more
but other than that i really like to order two or three pairs
so any opinions? pro/con
Cheers
Marc

| Re: How do I tell which A/D Converter is better - thanks for the
input Matthias 22:40:28 |
| | Dear group members,
in my first post I said, that this might be the right group to post to - and it turned out, that it definitely IS.
Thanks for all your input on this issue (though more will follow during the time I develop myself) - there is surely a lot of testing to be done to finally figure out which converters to use.
At the moment I have the folling options / equipment for ADDA conversion (and recording):
- ADAT (Blackface, 8 x 16-Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) - Recorder
- AKAI DR8 (8 x 16 Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) - Recorder
- AKAI A-DAM DR1200 (12 x 16-Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) recorder, said to sound very 'analog' - which is good (my opinion) Not really a ADDA-option since I cannot use the converters just to do the conversion (like the ADAT) but have to record the converted signals first on digital tape and then do the transfer to another kind of digital storage - remains the question if I need the original D/A converters to keep the 'analog' sound - I guess I DO need them (loooong story ...)
- ESI WaMi Rack (4 x 20 Bit with up to 192 kHz) external ADDA
- KORG 1212 i/o (14 x 20 Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) - PCI
- 2 YAMAHA CBX-D3 (2 x 16-Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) - external ADDA
- 1 YAMAHA DMP7D - (with IFU 3 + 4, 8x 16 Bit with 44.1/48kHz) - mixer Digital Stereo out
- 1 YAMAHA DMP7 (8 x 16 Bit with 44.1/48 kHz) - mixer Analog stereo out (or digitally cascading to the DMP7D) (I thought it might make sense to use the effect-section with the ability to recall the parameters by MIDI)
- there are a couple of soundcards showing up, but I tend to prefer external units to convert the signals
- in addition, there's an analog mixing console which I like to use (my guess is, that it's semi-professionell - don't know, if anyone heard about the UK company 'Platinum' and their LEVEL IV console)
I think it'll take some time to check all this to finally decide which way to go for ADDA conversion to 'store' my original tracks on a computer harddrive (any suggestions are welcome - smile)
All this equipment was pretty cheap thinking back to the times when a 16-track recorder (TASCAM-38) was still in the US$ 2500 range.
I'd like to combine the analog 'warmth' with the easyness of digital storage - but that's maybe what a lot of people want who are interested in music / recording.
Thanks again Matthias

| Mixing desk info request Big Tim 08:54:13 |
| | Hi, I'm making the step up from basic home recording to a more substantial setup. It's still very basic (I wouldn't even go as far as to call it a studio) but I've been accumulating some fairly cheap gear to get started with. The aim is to replace with better gear as time and funds allow. It's good enough to get an idea of what I'm doing in a learn-as-you-go kind of way.
Anyhoo, the main reason for this post is that I've managed to get my hands on a Teac "Tascam series" M-15 desk. 24 channel, 8 bus, looks its age but has been reasonably looked after and supposedly everything works, although I haven't fully tested it yet. It's certainly been used til very recently in a local recording studio (they got rid of because they were upgrading).
However I'm struggling to find any info or a manual or anything about this desk. The internet seems pretty sparse and I'm not sure where to look for companies or organisations who might be able to help.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the desk, or any suggestions where I might be able to get more info?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

| OT(?): Sony Wireless Headphones MDR-IF0230? Travis Pupkin 02:56:54 |
| | Hi,
I was rummaging around and discovered a pair of Sony Wireless Headphones (MDR-IF0230) that I got packaged with something else I bought (most likely my MiniDisc recorder) over a year ago and had since forgotten about.
I actually have a use for them now, but I can't find my users manual, if I ever got one.
Are these things supposed to come with a transmitter? Or do I have to buy one separately? I did some cursory Google searches and couldn't find a Sony brand transmitter made to work with this model (which is suspiciously absent from the Sony web site). I may have the transmitter, if it exists, around here somewhere, but have no idea what it would look like.
Can anyone point me to a source of info about the type of transmitter required for these to function?
Thanks.

| downloading SonicStage Andrewh 07:51:27 |
| | I have not yet purchased my HiMD, though I will definitely after Christmas, but I have been wondering if I am able to download the latest version of Sonic Stage in advance of the purchase. Is there any reason why this won't work?
I know it is a huge download - on my pitiful modem connection that runs an average of 3 Kb/s it will take all night.
I kind of have in the back of my mind that Sony might manage to disable the use of the HiMDRenderer trick described on this forum and I'd like to get the software in place in advance should they do so.

| Belts For Aiwa F660 Cassette Dexk Stephen 18:27:28 |
| | I've had an Aiwa F660 cassette deck for many years (more than I'd care to remember!) and it's just given up on playing cassettes.
So I took off the cover to find that my thoughts of a broken belt was confirmed. It appears that there's two belts in the back of the drive unit one from the motor (white) spindle to a pulley and another from this pulley to another pulley which seems to drive the cassette in play mode. It's the former belt that's broken and was found to be wrapped around the motor spindle. Extracting it was an art as it's perished and sticking together being very fragile in this state.
My question is firstly does anyone know of anywhere I can obtain replacement belts (might as well do both at same time) and secondly how do I go about changing them (what parts do I have to dismantle). I'm not a total novice at repairing hi-fi and have the skills to attempt small jobs especially on old equipment sure as this.
